With Swordplay, Readings and a Shakespeare Recitation Contest
Another Read Through Bookstore and local author Cindy Brown will fete William Shakespeare on his 451st birthday on Sunday, April 26th. The event will include a swordfighting exhibition by Oregon Fencing Alliance, readings from Macbeth by Portland Actors Ensemble (the Shakespeare-In-The-Park folks), a Shakespeare recitation contest, and a reading of Macdeath, Brown’s debut novel, “a hilarious riff on an avante-garde production of the Scottish play” (Mystery Scene Magazine).
The true date of Shakespeare’s birthday remains a mystery. Some scholars believe the Bard was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon on April 23rd, 1564, but many celebrate his birthday on April 26th, the day he was baptized in Stratford’s Holy Trinity parish church. This year’s Portland-based celebration will take place from 1:30–3:00 p.m. in the plaza just outside Another Read Through at 3932 N. Mississippi Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97227 (503-208-2729). The recitation contest is open to everyone of all ages, and participants can recite anything from a few lines from a play to an entire sonnet.
