Actor Jocelyn Seid plays The Soothsayer in PAE’s Antony and Cleopatra
Greetings to you all! Today Portland Actors Ensemble (PAE) brings you a new Cleo Chat interview with the entertaining Antony and Cleopatra actor, Jocelyn Seid. Our production of Antony and Cleopatra is part of PAE’s 2014 free summer Shakespeare in the Parks series. Today Jocelyn tells us about her experience of working on this Shakespeare show.
(Athena McElrath–AM) Who is your character in the story of Antony and Cleopatra?
(Jocelyn Seid–JS) I play The Soothsayer.
(AM) What was your favorite experience working on this show?
(JS) It has been magical and humbling to see each person in this cast literally transform themselves into someone I didn’t previously know. There have been times when I look into the eyes of Andrea [Cleopatra]or Matt [Antony] while we are on stage and there is no trace of them in there. I feel as if I have been swept away to this alternate world where I am really interacting with Mark Antony and Cleopatra and that, in turn, takes me out of my body and allows me to give up that space, if you will, to the Soothsayer.
(AM) What and when was your first encounter in your life with Shakespeare?
(JS) I grew up in Cincinnati and went to an arts school I was a drama minor and a costume design major. At one point we had to read (as most schools do) a play by Shakespeare. It was Romeo and Juliet. However, since this was an arts school, my class decided they were going to instead take the class time and go down to our black box theater to actually act out certain scenes. To be clear, these were some of the most talented high school students you could imagine. They were mounting theater that people from the area would pay a pretty penny to see. It was mesmerizing. I have been fascinated and intimidated by Shakespeare ever since.
It was so interesting to hear about your background and experience with our show, so thank you so much, Jocelyn! We’ll have more Cleo Chats soon, and stay tuned for the start of interviews with the talented cast and crew of Portland Actors Ensemble’s 2014 touring Shakespeare production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
