This summer has been full of surprises and challenges.
- PAE has a long history of performing our touring shows in unshaded parks on summer afternoons. I couldn’t be more grateful that our partners in the wine country and at Metro have collaborated to have evening performances in most of our venues. The extreme heat of the summer days this year would have necessitated regrettable cancellations.
- The Complete Works (abridged)* is a standard at many Shakespearean and classical companies, but new to us. Who knew it would be so well received? After a soft opening at Concordia University, we closed our first Willamette Shakespeare weekend with record breaking numbers for their venues: nearly 1300 people saw this lively, bawdy, brilliant, and updated ball of hilarity!! And they loved it. Not only are the audiences eating up the comic stylings of Sara Fay Goldman, Joel Patrick Durham, and Landy Hite, but our partners at WS are telling us this is their best show ever!
- We are about to kick off something else entirely different for us – an indoor venue (but still not a theater), and still free (according to our mission) – We are doing a Pacific NW take on ‘Drunk Shakespeare,’ which is a classic East Coast tradition. And we are doing it in the Funhouse Lounge! Come see our Bard in the Bar series: Shakespeare After Dark,** so far booked for 2 nights, both Sundays, August 12th and 26th @8PM, no cover. Each performance will be different. If you love it, there will be more to come.
As we crest the arc of our 49th season, we are happy to be ‘old’ theater dogs continuing to learn new tricks. We see great things in store for the future – and an exciting 50th season ahead!
